CLOUD VS. COLOCATION
DATA HOSTING: WHAT’S BETTER?
The decision between colo and cloud is often faced by many organizations. The answer lies in which method best meets the goals of the business. Colocation and cloud both have roles to play for any business.
Colocation started as a means to help businesses maintain or improve their ability to protect the availability of their systems and data more efficiently. Data centers are expensive to build and manage, requiring substantial investment in capital for construction and infrastructure and continuing investments in maintenance and support. Managing electrical systems, cooling systems and other facilities issues takes IT away from strategic initiatives. By building a multi-tenant environment, colos provide better data centers at a lower operating costs than an organization can do themselves. But colo customers still have to purchase and maintain their own racks full of switches, routers, firewalls, servers and storage. Cloud is the natural progression for some businesses who no longer want to purchase hardware and to pay annual support and maintenance fees. Cloud is the next generation strategy to help free up your IT staff's time to work on and support your core business.
So does that make cloud "better" than colo?
The answer lies in what's best for the business. Three critical questions to ask are:
1. What do our users need and expect?
2. Do we have the skills, knowledge and resources available to manage?
3. What performance requirements do our applications need to meet?
What you may find is that there are some applications that just don't fare well in the cloud - for instance latency-adverse apps that require extreme performance that you just can't get from the cloud. Or you may find that your users are demanding more time from your IT staff and they are consumed with managing hardware support contracts and refreshes and just can't get to critical business projects.
And when you complete your analysis you may find "both" is the answer.
Liberty Center One and One Cloud Services allows you to choose either a colo or cloud model or to combine them in a hybrid. Our goal is to provide services that are the right fit for your business without compromise.
